Nest candles were created by the home fragrance queen, Laura Slatkin. After starting a business career at Lehman Brothers, Laura met and married Harry Slatkin, and the two started a fragrance line that would create an empire. Laura Slatkin founded Nest Candles in the fall of 2008. As Laura stated in an interview with the Huffington Post, "I wanted people to look at NEST and think of NEST as a home fragrance collection they would buy for their own homes."
Harry and Laura are known not only for their home fragrance lines, but they are also committed to philanthropy. When their son was diagnosed with Autism, they founded the New York Center for Autism, to further education and research of the disease. About the Slatkin Family
Harry and Laura Slatkin are a husband-wife home fragrance team that created an empire. When they met they both worked on Wall Street, Harry as an investment banker at Bear Stearns and Laura as senior vice president with Lehman Brothers. Harry was inspired by Vera Wang to leave the banking world and pursue a more creative business life. Harry thought that was exactly what he needed, and he began running his brother's interior design company with Laura at his side.
The team then developed the home fragrance line Slatkin & Co. The line became one of the most successful home fragrance lines ever created. In 2005, the line was bought by Limited Brands and sold at Bath & Body Works. This gave the Slatkin's the opportunity to develop new candle lines and further explore the world of home fragrance.
In 1992 the couple welcomed twin children, Alexandra and David. David was diagnosed at the age of two with severe autism, and the couple's life changed forever. While researching the disease, Laura discovered that the closest school for Autistic children was in New Jersey. The two of them could not believe this. They didn't understand why their son could not attend a school that offered the attention he needed near their home in New York.Harry and Laura then founded the NYCA, the New York Center for Autism. The foundation focuses on autism education and research. This also lead to the NYCA Charter School, dedicated to serving children with autism. The NYCA also partnered with New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College to form the Institute for Brain Development, a comprehensive autism institute established in White Plains, NY.
Harry Slatkin remains with Limited Brands and oversees product development for the company. Laura went on to form the Candela Group, through which she developed a new home fragrance line, Nest Candles.
